Cruise Dress Codes Explained: What to Actually Pack

Packing for a cruise formal night is a source of genuine anxiety for first-time cruisers. Forums are full of questions: "Do I need a tuxedo?" "Can I wear a nice sundress?" "What happens if I don't dress up?" The answer depends almost entirely on which cruise line you're sailing.
The Spectrum: from Zero to Tuxedo
Virgin Voyages and Norwegian sit at one end: no formal nights, no required dress codes, the vibe is whatever you want. Holland America and Princess sit at the other end: traditional formal nights where evening gowns and tuxedos are not unusual, and the dress code is enforced. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Disney, and MSC fall in the middle.
Themed Nights Are Underrated
Many cruisers focus on formal night and completely forget about themed nights, which are often more fun and less stressful. Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Night (all-red outfits) sees near-100% participation. Disney's Pirate Night is a highlight for families. Norwegian's White Hot Party is one of the most popular nights on any NCL sailing. Pack at least one themed outfit and you'll have a memorable evening.
What to Actually Pack
For a 7-night cruise on most mainstream lines: two cocktail dresses or dark suit combinations for formal nights (most lines have 2 per 7-night sailing), one themed outfit if your line has a theme night, and smart casual separates for the remaining evenings. You don't need to pack a full wardrobe. Cruise dinners aren't fashion shows, and nobody judges you for repeating outfits on a 7-night sailing. Once you've finalized your outfit plan, run through our pre-cruise checklist to make sure nothing else gets forgotten before you board.
